7 reasons why you should switch to ubuntu 10.04 from windows

June 12th, 2010 | by admin |

Rapid development on some linux distros (Specially Ubuntu) have made these distros easy to use for every one, more secure and faster in performance.I wasn’t a big fan of ubuntu or any other linux distro.I tried ubuntu 6,ubuntu 7,ubuntu 8 and ubuntu 9 but they couldn’t satisfy me.Before somedays i was occasionally visiting ubuntu website and i saw that a new version ubuntu 10.04 is coming very soon.I took a tour and i was really impressed with this new distro.

From that day i was waiting for ubuntu 10.04 to get stable,  so i can install it and then after somedays the day came when canonical Ltd released stable build of ubuntu 10.04, i downloaded and install it to give it a try.Now I have been using ubuntu 10.04 for 2 week and i am very satisfied with its performance and features. Now i have almost switched to ubuntu 10.04 from windows vista.I want to share some reasons why you should switch to ubuntu 10.04 from windows.

1) More secure.

As all of us know that linux is more secure as compare to windows, number of viruses and trojans is also very less in linux as compare to windows.Default firewall of linux is more secure than the one in windows, not allowing any other user to write system files rather than only root is also another reason for linux to be secure.

2) More Faster in performance

Linux is also faster in performance as compare to windows, linux system requirement is low and it works smooth on slow pcs

3) Quick boot and shutdown

This is another very cool feature of linux specially ubuntu that it boots up and shuts down very quickly (in 4 -5 Seconds) where windows take arround 20 – 30 seconds and it can take more time if you have lots of applications installed in windows and you shouldn’t want your computer to take minutes to get started and shut down

4) Easy and quick application install

Most of the flavors of linux specially ubuntu has provided much easy ways to install application.Although installing applications isn’t too difficult in windows but linux seems to be more easy because most of the important softwares are already in list.what we need to do is to just run a command of apt-get install with application name to install and it will do the rest.

5) Stunning colors

I have used most of the linux flavors (ubuntu, fedora and cent OD) and have realized that the colors of linux is just stunning as compare to windows, as i have multiple operating systems installed including windows and linux.i firstly booted up windows and use a wallpaper then i switch to linux with the same wallpapers.I was amazed with linux colors. .Linux colors are just stunning than windows,Windows 7 does have good colors but still unable to beat linux.

6) Default Social networking client

Gwibber, A social networking client in ubuntu is just awesome, it provides us with the option to add all of the social networks accounts (e.g. facebook, twitter, digg and friendfeed) at a single place and then enjoy,Whereas in windows we have to search for the social networking client or we need to use browser to access social network client.

7) All in One Chat application

Ubuntu has an All in one chat application install by defaut, giving us convienience to add all the chat accounts (MSN,Yahoo,Gmail and even facebook) in one application and then we can enjoy chat, file sharing and other cool features,If we have a look on windows then we have to download all the messengers seperately, there are some all in one chat applications available for windows but they aren’t that much efficient as application in ubuntu is.

One reason why you shouldn’t install it:

    - It just does not work.

Ohhh but it does. I can get ubuntu installed and working on my dell studio 1558 laptop in about 30 min. It automatically detects all the drivers needed for the hardware then prompts me to install them. After a quick reboot everything “just works.”
When I did a reinstall of win7 I had to download about 8 different drivers from the dell support site. The correct wireless drivers were not included on the driver page for the my model something I did not realize until several hours later and significant googling.

Ubuntu 10.4 LTS is the best operating system i have tried out. Not only does it run alot faster, but you can go to codeweavers.com and download the perfect windows emulator, crossover linux. With this emulator you can install all of your favorite windows games and applications.

right now im usuing a compaq presario that has an intel processor and 512mb’s of ram. the only problem i had trouble doing was getting my wireless to work, but all i had to do was hook it up to a wired, download the updates, unplug it, and get on the internet and it works great with broadband cards too. My dad got a verizon broadband card and i got to do is plug it in and im good to go. the only problem i have now is trying to find a windows emulator to run a game called dungeon seige lol. but ubuntu 10.04 so far….. no scratch that all of ubuntus versions have been better than windows :)

I just installed Lucid. Lets just say I wish I hadnt. The first time I kicked over to Ubuntu as my desktop distribution of choice was Feisty. I have to say Im growing irritated by the desktop bloat and the attitude at which changes get implemented. The smallest of my pet peeves was the fact that they just randomly decided to change the side the Minimize,Maximize and Close button was on. The next is the application switcher. The list actually goes on. But these MINOR annoyances are what add up.

Its not easier than Windows or OSX to get applications installed. Multimedia? AHHAHAHA. Getting media to work on Linux is a pain in the arse. It always has been, it probably always will be. I adore Linux and will probably continue using it on my desktop for work purposes for many years to come, but please. At this rate it will NEVER overtake Windows or OSX on the desktop. Oh yes, and while Im at it, Compiz is also shockingly bloated. My God. Metacity ftw. But even with Metacity it chunks.

What!!!, Ubuntu it not ready to be used yet, It has a lot of problems. If you want a system for working, use windows, but If you have a lot of free time to waste looking for how to fix problems, Ubuntu is your system. For example, on my laptop, a dell 1558, the fans never stop, even with the ATI drivers, but in windows it works nice. A lot of other users have the same problem The graphic card in ubuntu has a lot of problems, even with the ATI drivers, …
